If you have a lot of papers to grade for your online class, consider using a threaded discussion area for paper submissions.
What this does for online classroom management:
It provides a reliable posting area for your students. In other words, if a student posts the paper to the thread, the paper is on the server, and will have fewer chances of getting lost in e-mail transmission, or other transmission mechanism.
It time- and date-stamps the assignments, so you know without a doubt when the paper was submitted.
It provides a ready resource in the event audit review boards need to see records of class work, or if a student challenges a paper submission or missing assignment report.
What this does for student learning:
Students have the opportunity to "peer-review" documents for each other; offer suggestions for paper topics, or perspectives on the issues raised in the classroom.
Students tend to review final copies more carefully because the final papers are visible for everyone in the class to see (and comment on as well).
Students can track progress in their writing in the online environment, by having a visible record from week to week as it exists on the server.
